Collective-conversations (2010-)

The 'collective-conversations' are organized as group workshops where all the participant's voices are invited to join in – the dynamics involves a constant shift between talking, writing and reading; the different voices are taken as they may sound – with differences in language, pronunciation, tone, etc – but also in terms of what anyone has to say to each other and to the group about the topics we propose to discuss. Three outcomes result from the collective-conversations, as complementary requirements: (1) a document is produced, in the form of a script, which may be published at any time; (2) a public reading is enacted, where the script is performed in front of an audience; (3) the reading is recorded, resulting in a sound piece.

Ricardo Basbaum (São Paulo, 1961) investigates art as a mediation device and platform for the articulation between sensorial experience, sociability and language. Since the 1990s, has been nurturing a vocabulary specific to his work, applying it in a particular way to each new project. The 'collective-conversations' series started in 2010, having been performed with different groups in events in Córdoba, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Montevideo, London, Vancouver, Chicago, Hamburg and Kiev, among other cities. Recent solo-projects include 'corte-contaminação-contato' (Galeria Jaqueline Martins, São Paulo, 2017) and 'the production of the artist as a collective conversation' (Audain Gallery, Vancouver, 2014).
