Espectros Cromáticos (1967)

[English Below]

Marlene Fernandes taught me musical analysis at the Villa-Lobos Institute, in the 1970s. Always very rigorously, she kept her analytical focus on formal aspects of composition, always avoiding slipping into the field of taste. Her personal preferences were manifested only in the suggestions of the works to be analyzed. Our exercises were always done mainly by listening to the music, but invariably they were music noticed on score. They were, therefore, more 'objective' because theoretically more 'analyzable' than electroacoustics, which only rely on ears, memory and a sparse descriptive vocabulary. As his former student, I was offered the challenge of writing about an electroacoustic work by Marlene.

In the case of electroacoustic music, achieving an analytical 'objectivity' is a little less feasible than if you were in the regime of noted music. Also due to the lack of boundary between the musical and the sonic, between the 'sound' and the 'sense', between the transporter and the transported, in short, without the security of borders that provide 'objective' safety nets, talking about music electroacoustic puts us in a more unstable terrain than that of instrumental and noted music. In his 'Traité des Objets Musicaux' (1966), Pierre Schaeffer emphasized the need to create new analytical tools for music made with these media that now are not new. After more than half a century, we can say that the new analytical tools that emerged at that time are far from meeting objective criteria. For this reason and without any pretense, I feel free with my impressions of listening, admittedly inclined by my personal taste and a certain specialism acquired by belonging to the world in which I work. With much respect and admiration, I have accepted the task of investigating “Espectros Cromáticos”, trying to be “as objectively as possible”, aware that this is not much more than the driving subterfuge for a volatile goal.

Coincidentally, we talked a lot, between 1977 and 1978, about electroacoustic music and 'Traité'. But never about ‘Espéctros Cromáticos"’ or about how she, an analyst trained by Esther Scliar, would talk about this piece that she composed in 1967 at the Instituto Torquato di Tela, in Argentina. As if it were composed by a Schaeffer disciple - which Marlene was not - this work does not differ from an excellent "étude" requested for the trainees at the former ORTF: short, concise, well in accordance with the Schaefferian precepts, focusing on a precise aspect, a specific question, such as, for example: 'Étude aux allures', or 'Étude aux sons animés', by Schaeffer himself. In Ëspeçtros Cromáticos", even the intention of a study is already in the title: the chromatic and the spectrum. 'Chromatic' not so much in the sense it would have in traditional music, but in pictorial-sound, being related to a perception of color in its bridge with the perception of timbre. Such cuts occur in the field of work of the sound spectrum, a compositional approach that was systematically explored shortly afterwards by the French spectralist aesthetics.
We immediately recognize Marlene's economy and conciseness. The sound sources are hidden, so that our attention does not drift to any kind of 'anecdothism' - that narrative charge, despised by Schaeffer, carried by the sound items obtained microphonically - allowing us to explore morphological-like qualities such as those found in 'Traité', which by the date of publication, in 1966, Marlene could hardly have known. Here are the criteria such as mass and thickness, which, in technical, non-Schaefferian language, would translate into filtering control. Layers and synthetic materials (white noise, pink?) alternate - and eventually overlap - in contrast to discrete materials captured by the microphone. The former, in a more fixed, almost hieratic, sculptural behavior; the latter, agitated by light rhythmic proposals, at the limit between the granular and the accidental. Both appear in different concentrations inserted in the spectrum of a texture whose low threshold, in the high-pitched section, seems to want to avoid it.

Even in the condition of 'étude' “Espéctros Cromáticos” is not devoid of what I would call lyricism, when, from quiet and possibly somber backstage, one or another tone (masse tonique...) gradually stands out, either as a lonely voice , or a choir. Built by detached blocks, but always linked by fusion, there is a progression in spectral 'complexity' (again in Schaefferian vocabulary: the opposite of 'tonicity'). As an exception confirming the rule, there is a moment of greater tonic concentration preceding the final complexity.

In the first segment, the search for block overlap can be seen, with six or seven in the first thirty seconds, for example. They will not be exactly the same items in the following segments, but always the stacking procedure, emphasizing layers here and there, which will unfold until the end of the piece. In other brief moments of exception by the rule, Marlene melodically flexes some objects, all of which, for almost the entire duration, remain stable in terms of pitch. What always flexes is the thickness of the masses, due to the effect of careful filtering. Being almost always located in the medium-low region, in the final seconds, one of them, with broader limits, but almost hollow in the middle region, advances over the most acute area of the spectrum. In addition to filtering, the use of ring modulation also seems to leave a mark on this mass ‘chroma-tone’ exercise.

Since most of the piece is present in the geographical center among the speakers, the panoramic space is explored sparingly, indicating a lesser interest in 'spatial orchestration', which years later consolidated itself as one of the greatest tropisms of electroacoustic aesthetics. However, subtle gestures in the pots seem to outline a desire to move forward in this dimension.

"Espectros Cromáticos" is probably the least proclaimed contribution within the nascent repertoire of electroacoustic music in Brazil. But it is certainly the one that has sustained itself best over the years, not so much because of its apparent lack of interest in the 'author', but because it reveals, in each listening, the absolute sincerity of a researcher who was more dedicated to knowledge than to laurels. In other words: it is the work that, exactly because of unpretentiousness, has left a better personal mark.
