About Privileges (2015)

The installation is a series of connected PVC tubes passing through an abandoned old ventilation in the Red Bull Station building. In 2012 this historical heritage site, dating from 1904, was bought and converted by Red Bull into a contemporary art and music space in São Paulo. The conversion included the soundproofing of the building, which is located in one of the busiest, most sound polluted avenues of the city centre. The tubes are mounted in an airway passage connecting the internal and external areas of the building. This site-specific work makes audible the contradictory relationship of sound as a medium. When modified aesthetically it is welcomed and integrated into the contemporary art space whilst simultaneously being rejected by the building’s design. This work is an institutional critique discussing the privileges associated with cultural work and international corporate funding in contemporary arts in Brazil.

Vanessa De Michelis (Belo Horizonte, 1983) is an interdisciplinary sound artist, cultural worker and educator born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, who lives and works in London. Her early work consists of electroacoustic soundscape compositions bringing into play improvisation, field recording and live electronics. Her latest works explore minimalism and noise in sound installations and live performances. Since 2009 her pieces have been exhibited in museums, galleries and festivals of experimental music, art and technology in Brazil, Latin America and Europe. She is part of Sonora (Brazilian network for feminisms, sound art and contemporary music) and in London has been increasingly involved with the Her Noise legacy-group. Currently she researchers cultural labour and organised feminisms in sound art and has been awarded a scholarship to finish her master’s in arts policy and curating in the Film, Media and Cultural Studies department of Birkbeck – University of London.
