Memories of Zahrah (2016)

'Memories of Zahrah' is a tribute to a young Lebanese immigrant, Zahrah Jahjah El Haouli, who left her homeland, in 1948, to stay permanently in Brazil, where she lived, raised her children, and died, in 1998. Her voice, fragile as a result of advanced disease, is more than a verbal language vehicle, it is a channel for affection, remembrances of her life, marked by much loss, pain, suffering, but surmounted by the joys experienced as she built her family and life in a new country. The soundscapes used in the piece were conceived by the authors, based on information obtained from the places of origin.

Janete El Haouli (Cambé, 1955) a musician, sound/radio artist, cultural producer and researcher with an emphasis on experimentation of radiophonic media, experimentation of voice and sound poetry, listening and soundscapes in creation processes. Graduation in Music. Master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Ph.D. in Arts/Radio (University of São Paulo - USP). Professor at the State University of Londrina/UEL, Department of Music and Theater (1981-2011). She developed commissioned radio creation projects for WDR in Cologne and for DeutschlandRadio Berlin, amongst others. Her research on the voice of Demetrio Stratos has reached international prominence where she has and she published the book Demetrio Stratos: In Search of Voice-Music in Italy, in Brazil and in Mexico.

José Augusto Mannis (São Paulo, 1958) is a composer, electroacoustic performer, sound designer, faculty member, researcher. His repertoire covers a variety of musical genres and styles: electroacoustic, instrumental, music for video, theatre, radio art, and multi-media installations. His music is characterized by one overriding factor: sound and musical gesture as are essential concerns. As a performer of electroacoustic music, he has worked with Ensemble L’Itineraire (France), Ensemble Antidogma (Turin), Grupo Círculo (Madrid), Duo-Diálogos (Brazil) and INA-GRM. He is a professor at the University of Campinas (Arts Institute / UNICAMP) in Brazil, and his research includes music digital library, music cataloging and the development of acoustical research in room acoustics, bioacoustics and sound engineering for recording, musical performance, sound art and immersive listening.
